What is the FAA’s goal with Remote ID?
According to the FAA, Remote ID will help “the FAA, law enforcement, and other federal agencies find the control station when a drone appears to be flying in an unsafe manner or where it is not allowed to fly. Remote ID also lays the foundation of the safety and security groundwork needed for more complex drone operations.”
When will Remote ID go into effect?
Drone manufacturers will have until October 21, 2022 (18 months from effective date) to begin producing drones with remote ID. Remote ID will become mandatory outside designated FRIA zones by October 21, 2023 (30 months from effective date).
Remote ID won’t replace drone detection
While the initial motivation for Remote ID came out of a public safety initiative. By unlocking the benefits coming from the Remote ID initiative and developing sophisticated airspace management solutions, we can move closer to safely integrating advantageous drone use while curbing the malicious use of drones.
Limitations to Remote ID:
- Criminals
- Easy to spoof GPS
- Hobbyist can be slow to comply
Just as there are limitations to drone detection, Remote ID comes with limitations as well. Remote ID will only work for drones following the law. Criminals will find a way to circumvent the regulations, and finding ways to hack your drone takes seconds with the help of a quick Google search.
Once Remote ID becomes mandatory, a system that can verify Remote ID will be a must-have tool for security teams to distinguish between the good and the bad drones. Low-risk areas that don’t have a need or the budget for multi-layered drone detection could use Remote ID receivers to track drones flying in and around their facilities.
In many cases, Remote ID receivers and drone detection will work together. High-risk areas such as airports, stadiums, prisons, or other critical infrastructures shouldn’t rely solely on Remote ID receivers, it’s too easy to spoof broadcast signals.
