South Carolina prisons will install netting to fight contraband

South Carolina Director of Corrections, Bryan Stirling, says state prisons are under attack from the outside, and the Department of Corrections is looking for ways to improve security. The cost to install netting at all South Carolina state prisons is expected to be between $6-7 million.

They say metal detectors, police dogs, and armed corrections officers just aren’t enough to stop these criminals from receiving contraband behind bars. As a result, all South Carolina state prisons will install netting that reaches about 50-feet above ground.

Netting does seem like a step in the right direction but is it enough to prevent contraband from entering prisons? Nets will not deter drones from infiltrating prison yards, but it will stop people from tossing over bags, cell phones, or other contraband. Implementing drone detection at prisons will be the next step in preventing inmates from getting contraband.
