Rise of Drone Drops in Prisons: A Threat to Security

Written by Roudy Chamy | Apr 26, 2024 10:23:34 AM

A recent report by Midlands 103 shone a light on a disturbing trend plaguing correctional facilities nationwide: the use of drones to deliver contraband into prisons. These drone drops pose a significant threat, potentially introducing drugs, weapons, and cell phones that undermine prison security and rehabilitation efforts.

The Scope of the Problem:

News reports like this one highlight the growing sophistication of drone technology and its potential for misuse. Drones can easily bypass traditional security measures like fences and guard patrols, creating vulnerabilities in prison perimeters. This smuggled contraband can have a domino effect, fueling violence within prisons, jeopardizing the safety of inmates and staff, and hindering an institution's ability to rehabilitate offenders.

Recorded cases of drones being used for contraband have been exponentially increasing lately. Earlier this month, the Georgia Department of Corrections facilities have been infiltrated with contraband using drones. "Operation Skyhawk" was able to confiscate a total of 185 pounds of tobacco, 67 pounds of marijuana, 51 pounds of ecstasy, 12 pounds of methamphetamine, 10 grams of cocaine, and nearly 100 smartphones and apprehended 150 individuals, according to officials, among them were eight employees of the Georgia Department of Corrections.

A similar incident occurred in Florida as well where a drone was used to smuggle cellphones, SIM cards, razors, tobacco and other contraband into a Florida correctional facility.

The Need for Innovative Solutions:

Addressing this evolving threat requires more than just traditional security measures. Correctional facilities need innovative solutions that can effectively detect and deter drone activity.

This is where AirSight steps in.
