A recent incident at Washington State Prison highlights the ongoing challenge of preventing contraband smuggling into correctional facilities using drones. Drones are being used to smuggle a variety of contraband, including drugs, weapons, and communication devices, into prisons. These items can compromise security, facilitate criminal activity, and endanger the safety of inmates and staff.
Two individuals were arrested after a deputy witnessed a drone dropping a package onto the prison grounds. On September 18, 2024, a deputy patrolling Davisboro, Georgia, observed a drone flying over Washington State Prison and heard the sound of a package being dropped. Suspicious of the activity, the deputy located a vehicle in the area that matched the description of a potential suspect.
Following a traffic stop, deputies discovered a drone in the backseat of the vehicle along with a quantity of illegal drugs and other prohibited items. Jasiah Guadalupe and Jordyn Seay were subsequently arrested and charged with various offenses related to the attempted smuggling.
